...that years before Lexus released the CT200h hybrid hatchback, Giugiaro came up with a far less attractive Lexus hatchback design back in 1994 known as the Landau.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Makes the CT look good in comparison, doesn’t it? Not one of Italdesign’s finest moments...

That front grill and headlight combinations are hideous. And this really looks like it should be a three door not a five door. Otherwise, I like it.

I always thought the CT was pretty sharp, but Toyota ruined an opportunity to have a hot hatch for the American public.

Sweet Daewoo.

That and I think it needs to be a bit lower. Either way, goes to show that the CT actually isn’t a bad looking little thing, especially compared to what could have been twenty years ago. Also, good to see you around Oppo! I haven’t seen much from you lately, but every time you post something from Japan it is a treat! I hope everything is going well across the Pacific, and look forwards to hearing from you from time to time!

I like it!

Ick. I still think Giugiaro did worse on the Daewoo line.
![]() 01/23/2016 at 01:07 |

Agreed. I hear it wasn’t even that economical, just slow and dreary while returning like 30 mpgish. Tragic.

Well, if we can just decapitate the front end it would honestly look passable, maybe even decent. But that evil grin is just nightmare inducing...

Honestly, I don’t hate the predator face anymore.

Sweet Daewoo, bro

For Canada beat you to that one... ;D

Dammit

I hate the newer ones, but I liked the “in between” predator face.

I actually kinda like the Lanos...

I think Bertone was better at Daewoo styling, since the clean and elegant Espero was their brainchild.

I wasn't writing as much because I was in an every day negotiation labor dispute with my primary employer over about $10,000 in pension contributions and it took months to resolve.

Ah, that sounds rather painful, I hope everything is worked out by now! By the way, what is it that you do over in Japan? Just curious, don’t mean to be too prying if you don’t mind...

introducing the Taurus hatchback by Buick

Very accurate, but then again, all Lexuses had this kind of design style going on at the time thanks to Giugiaro. This one is just exceptionally ugly.
The first GS was rather Buick-like as well...

That seems to be the precursor to the first Lexus GS ;)

never seen this Lexus before.

You know whats even more baffling? All of Itals most hideous 90s designs eventually became Daewoos.
![]() 01/23/2016 at 06:58 |

Compared to other cars from 94 it doesn’t look too bad. They wouldn’t use this design today obviously, but at that time they would have gotten some praise for it.

I know a few (Australian) people who have taken that path in Japan. It seems like a good gig for natural English speakers!

The roof is interesting. I don’t know why anyone would want a sunroof only for the rear, particularly in a hatch. It’s simultaneously similar to, and completely missing the point of a traditional landaulet.
It’s ugly, but compared to the over-worked shit Lexus has been putting out, it’s smooth and refined.
![]() 01/23/2016 at 07:51 |

Pretty sure that’s a Buick.

Its not as bad as whatever hatchback you posted.

Well no, but it’s getting worse...

True.

It looks like an Enclave was shrunk in the wash...

Yeah, I concur that the lines are rather elegant and uncluttered compared to modern Lexuses, but the front doesn’t really do any wonders for me... That trunk is also very odd because the rear glass is wraparound and lifts up on its own... Perhaps this was designed to be a hatchback landaulet in a way, for chauffeured passengers who want a really weird looking five door...
![]() 01/23/2016 at 10:23 |

Well they’re the only ones who they could get to take them...

Me neither.

Nice! Sounds like an interesting thing to do overseas, I think several of my high school teachers have actually done the same.
![]() 01/23/2016 at 10:27 |

Kind of, but I guess since Ital was doing both at the same time they ended up looking similar. They even shared wheels!

I KNEW I SAW THOSE TAILLIGHTS SOMEWHERE ON A VW!! I was trying to include that in the post but I figured I was just seeing things...thanks for bringing it up so I know I’m not crazy...
